Inaugural Class of the Maryland Golf Hall of Fame Announced

(Lutherville, MD – May 26, 2021) – Eleven legendary figures in Maryland golf will comprise the first class in the newly formed Maryland Golf Hall of Fame.


Charlie Bassler, Head Professional at Rolling Road Golf Club: 7-time MD Open Champion, 5-time MAPGA Match Play Champion, 5-time MAPGA Section Champion, 5-time MAPGA Player of the Year.


Deane Beman: Attended BCC High School and University of MD. Winner of 2 US Amateurs, 1 British Amateur, 4 PGA Tour titles, 20 transformational years as Commissioner of the PGA Tour and a Member of the World Golf Hall of Fame.


Ralph Bogart: Winner of 26 MSGA titles including 10 Amateurs.


Robert Brownell: Winner of 10 consecutive Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Amateur titles (57 consecutive matches!)


Bill Clarke, Head Professional at Hillendale CC for 35 years: Past President of the PGA, Past President of the MAPGA, quintessential Rules Official at the PGA, The Masters, Ryder Cups and more. Member of the PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame (Inaugural Class).


B. Warren Corkran: Winner of 26 regional titles including 3 Maryland Amateurs and a Maryland Open.


Jane Fitzgerald: Winner of 8 MSGA titles: 5 Amateurs, 1 Open, 1 Mid-Amateur, 1 Jr Girls. 3-time MAGA Women’s Amateur Champion, qualified for 20 USGA events and was Finalist in USGA Senior Women’s Amateur in 2012.


Evelyn G. Glick: 11-time MD Amateur Champion and participant in 14 USGA Women’s Amateurs.


Roland MacKenzie: 2-time winner of Middle Atlantic Amateur, 3-time Walker Cup participant (record was 5-1).


Fred McLeod, Head Professional at Columbia Country Club for 55 years: Five top 4 finishes in the US Open, including winning the 1908 US Open. A member of the National PGA Hall of Fame.


Martin R. West III: Winner of 22 MSGA titles including 9 Amateurs and 3 Opens and participant in 40 USGA Championships.


Nearly one hundred public nominations made online for the Maryland Golf Hall of Fame were considered by the Nominations Committee. Each of the inductees of the Inaugural Class has an illustrious history of achievement that will be commemorated at the Maryland State Golf Association Centennial Celebration later this fall. More details and a specific date and venue will be announced in the coming months.


About the Maryland Golf Hall of Fame The Maryland Golf Hall of Fame was established to recognize and honor men and women who, as Maryland natives, or residents at their time of achievement, have impacted Maryland golf or have made extraordinary contributions to the game through competitive and non-competitive accomplishments, such as amateur and professional players, clubs professionals, architects, journalists, superintendents, mentors, and volunteers.
