"Jane Abood Fitzgerald, three-time Middle Atlantic GA Women’s Amateur Champion (1992, 1999, 2001), has been selected for induction into the MAGA Hall of Fame.  Her induction will take place at the association’s annual meeting on February 8 at the Columbia CC in Chevy Chase, Maryland.  Jane, who was inducted into the Maryland Golf Hall of Fame in 2022 as part of the inaugural class, will be joining her husband, James Fitzgerald, PGA, in the MAGA Hall of Fame.  Jim Fitzgerald was inducted into the MAGA Hall of Fame in 2020.

Jane is a native Marylander, growing up and currently residing in Montgomery County.  She was introduced to golf by her father, Mitchell Abood, and her uncle, Frank Abood, a PGA Professional.  Under their tutelage and with the support of her mother, Iola, Jane developed a very strong aptitude for golf.  She developed into a very fine junior golfer, winning the 1978 Maryland Junior Girls Championship at the Elkridge Club in Baltimore.  A member at the Kenwood Golf & Country Club, Jane won two club junior club championships. 1978 would prove to be a breakout year, as she also won the WDGA President’s Championship, the Mid-Atlantic Pro Junior, and the Talbot Invitational.  In the spring of 1979, her senior year at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, she was awarded a full athletic scholarship to Penn State University. In the summer of that year, she closed out her junior career by qualifying for the U. S. Girl’s Junior Amateur Championship.

While at Penn State she lettered every year and won three collegiate events and played in the 1982 and 1983 NCAA Championships.  She graduated in 1983, married PGA Professional Jim Fitzgerald in 1985, and won the first of her five Maryland Women’s Amateur titles in 1989.  She won again in 1990, 1992, 1995, and 2000.  She added the Maryland Women’s Open in 2001 and the Maryland Women’s Mid-Am in 2019 to her list of amateur state and regional championships.

During her stellar amateur career, Jane played in 23 USGA Championships:  one Girl’s Junior (1979), six Women’s Amateurs (1980, 1982, 1990, 1993, 1994, 2013), seven Women’s Mid-Amateurs (1990, 1992, 2000, 2001, 2009, 2016, 2017), seven Senior Women’s Amateurs (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021), one USGA Team Championship (1995), and one Women’s Open (1982), a period of time stretching over forty years.  She qualified for match play fourteen times in the amateur championships.  She has won the medal for low score in six USGA qualifiers.  Thirty years after competing in the 1982 U.S. Women’s Open, Jane competed in her first U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship and achieved a runner-up finish to multiple-time USGA champion Ellen Port.  Her association with the USGA does not stop with playing in championships.  Jane served on the USGA Men’s Public Links Championship Committee for two years.

Jane’s sister, Liza Abood, PGA/LPGA, is a highly respected golf instructor as well as a fine player.  and teaches at the Olney Golf Park. A native of the Washington metropolitan area, and a graduate from the University of Maryland, Liza’s childhood days included many rounds of golf.  The highlights of Liza’s successful professional career include being named the 2004 PGA Middle Atlantic Player of the Year and finishing 5th in the 2003 LPGA Teaching and Club Professional National Championship.

Golf runs in the family!
