Maryland Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2022: Martin R. West, III


Lifelong Columbia Country Club Member, Martin R. West III has won nine Maryland Amateur Championship titles between 1973 and 1997, including five of six between 1978 and 1983. He won three Maryland Opens (was low amateur nine times), two Maryland Senior Amateurs, two Four-Balls, two Pro-Amateur Championships, and four Senior Amateur titles. His twenty-two (22) Championships ranks second in the 100-year history of the Maryland State Golf Association. Further, he led Columbia to eleven (11) MSGA Team Championships and four Senior Team Championships. He won two Washington Metropolitan Amateurs (1974 & 1992), five Middle Atlantic Golf Association Amateurs (1973, 1976, 1978, 1980 & 1994), two Middle Atlantic Golf Association Senior Amateurs (2005 & 2006), and one Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Senior Amateur in 2012.

Marty is much more than a local golfer. He is a two-time college All-American, and in 1971, while representing the University of North Carolina, he won the Atlantic Coast Conference title, edging out future Major winner, Lanny Watkins. Marty played on the 1973 and 1979 Walker Cup teams and was a member of the winning 1972 United States World Amateur Team. Marty qualified for 38 USGA Championships, including nineteen (19) Amateurs, two US Opens, and two US Senior Opens. He shares two USGA records with the lowest first-round and lowest third round in 1971. (The US Amateur was a stroke play event from 1965-1972). Additionally, he has played in four Masters Tournaments, making the cut in 1973.

Marty is a sixteen (16)-time Club Champion, eleven (11)-time Senior Champion, and the 1965 Junior Champion at Columbia Country Club. He has also won the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm Club Championship five times. He won many national four-ball and invitational tournaments, including the Prestigious Crump Cup and Anderson Four-Ball.

In 2018, The MSGA presented Marty with the Dawson R. Stump Award “For His Great Sportsmanship and Outstanding Play in Local, State, National, and International Competition, and for his exemplary dedication to the Game and its Betterment.”

Martin R. West, III a Past President (1995) of the Middle Atlantic Golf Association, was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2000.
