Maryland Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2022: Robert W. (Bobby) Brownell

Bobby Brownell was born in Washington, D.C., and spent his life in the Washington area, where he took up golf at the age of 10. Bobby won his first golf tournament, the Washington Junior Championship, in 1934 at age fifteen (15). From 1946 to 1955, he won ten (10) consecutive D.C Amateur championships, winning fifty-four (54) consecutive matches. A record that may never be equaled. Brownell also won the Middle Atlantic Golf Association Amateur Championship five times and he won the Maryland Open Championship in 1941.

With Ralph Bogart, a fellow Chevy Chase Club member, and his partner in a successful insurance company they founded in 1948, Brownell won the prestigious Belle Haven Four Ball seven times and won the Anderson Memorial Four-Ball at Winged Foot in New York five times.

He played college golf at Duke University and was captain of the team in 1941, winning the Southern Conference title and the Southern Intercollegiate Championship that year. On consecutive Sundays in 1950, Brownell set the course records at Columbia Country Club with a 62 and Manor Country Club with a 63.

Ken Venturi, with whom Bobby played a lot of golf at the Burning Tree Club, stated that “Bobby’s game was good enough to be successful playing as a pro, but Bobby’s family and work were more important, and he remained an outstanding amateur golfer.”

Bobby Brownell was a Past President of the Maryland State Golf Association, the Middle Atlantic Golf Association, and the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association. He was inducted into the Middle Atlantic Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1985.
